Hazy. The sleepy-sick humidity fell over us like a blanket made of rainclouds. I squinted at my foot dangling into the murky water. Greenish-brown ripples flowed over the skin, hardly visible. The wooden dock was warm, each molecule vibrating from a day's worth of solar radiation, the source of which was now weak, hiding in its cumulus pillows. My beloved was nearby. The warm hand over mine...but I did not look. I stared off into the distance. I half expected to see an albatross, but of course there were none. I felt the eyes on my neck and still didn't turn my head. I inhaled deeply. The humidity made it difficult to breathe. It was then that the sun exploded. We covered our eyes to avoid the brightness. My beloved, like an angel unfolding its wings, held me. I was safe...protected. My beloved's heart was racing; I felt the short puffs of breath on my scalp. Were those eyes, which until that point had never left me, blinded by the light? A moment passed. The sun returned to its bed of clouds and the sea a mirror no more. And we remained as though nothing had happened. |
